Fertilization
Trees like other plants have many nutritional requirements
for sustained growth and reproduction. Due to numerous
environmental stresses upon trees in the urban forestry areas,
it is recommended to fertilize in order to provide needed
nutrients. When certain nutrients become deficient in the soil,
fertilization may be able to correct the deficiency. Fertilizers
come in different forms and are applied using different methods.
Benefits of Fertilization:
- More abundant foliage
- Fuller canopy
- Better resistance against insect and disease attack
- More tolerant to drought conditions
- Help a stressed tree from recent construction
- Or simply to maintain a healthy tree
Fertilizers
Fertilizers are available in organic and inorganic form. An
organic fertilizer is made from natural sources, such as plants,
animals, and unprocessed minerals. These contain carbon
compounds and may contain some inorganic material. Inorganic
fertilizers are man-made and release nutrients quickly.
Application Methods
Deep root feed is an injection into the soil/root zone done
with a probe from a power sprayer. The probe is injected into
the root zone approximately 8" to 12" deep with 150 to
200 lbs of pressure. Injections are done starting at the trunk
of the tree and are spaced 2 1/2 ft to 3ft apart extending in an
outward circular pattern. This method also aerates the area of
soil.
Another method is with trunk injections, this is when the
treatment is placed into the sapstream of the tree.
